Day 1

Having made it here via United and National car rental (and some scary road behaviour by US drivers!), we're now set up in our apartment at Ocean Sands at 2207 Atlantic Avenue, Virginia Beach. Simple 1 bed configuration with lounge/kitchen, decent bathroom and bedroom overlooking the ocean - Carol is wondering why we would want to go anywhere else!?

Well, having slept for 12 hours or thereabouts (!!), we decided to be very American and.....HIT THE MALL!!! Lynnhaven Mall to be exact. First job - find it. Virginia Beach is huge and the map we were given says (in very small letters) not to scale - they meant it. The layout and correlations bore no resemblance to reality but at least the addresses were accurate. To be fair, once you've sussed the US system of referring to intersections, finding anywhere becomes very easy. Like where we're staying is 2207 Atlantic Avenue - 7 past 22nd Street - dnnnnhhh?

Anyway, we found the mall and started looking for bargains to spend our dollars on - Macy's seemed a good place to start.

Shirts looked good but Carol decided they weren't quite right - unlike the pedal pusher trousers she found. Set the tone!

After the mall, I had to choose dinner venue, mmmmh. We settled on Baja Cantina, a mexican joint near the hotel. We both chose tacos - which we thought came in hard shells (these didn't). OK but we probably won't explore mexican beyond fajitas!

Another early night.
